Save ice time & boost performance! Essential 7-step routine prevents injuries, sharpens skills. Perfect for young GTHL players & busy parents.
7-Step Off-Ice Hockey Warm-Up: Unlock Your Best Game (Even Before You Hit the Ice!)
Why waste precious time? You’ve probably seen NHL stars perform elaborate pre-game warm-up routines. They stretch, roll, and slowly warm up their joints, often sprawled on the ice. But let’s be real: professional players have time to prepare before games. For youth hockey players, practice time is limited and valuable. You’re there to maximize your skills, not spend time warming up on the ice.
Why Warm-Ups Are Your Secret Weapon
Picture this: You’re lacing up at Scotiabank Pond, heart racing for practice. But your legs feel stiff, and your stick handling’s sloppy. Sound familiar? That’s where off-ice warm-ups swoop in like a superhero! For our Toronto young guns, ice time is gold—you don’t want to waste it shaking off cobwebs. A proper 15-minute routine primes your body to OWN the ice from the first stride.
Coach Daniel Ershov Tip: “Pro players warm up for hours. You? Just 15 minutes. But those minutes? They’re game-changers.”
15-Minute Magic: Save Time, Dominate Practice
Here’s the hack: Arrive 20 minutes early, crush your warm-up off the ice, and watch how coaches suddenly have time to teach you filthy dangles instead of basic laps. Parents love it too—no more rushing from school to rink!
The Full Routine: From Toes to Eyes
This 7-step routine is designed by our academy’s coaches to prep every part of you for hockey’s demands. Bonus: It fits perfectly between homework and practice!
Step 1: Wake Up Those Hockey Feet!
Gear: Tennis ball (or a lacrosse ball from Pro Hockey Life)
Time: 2 mins
Roll the ball under each foot like you’re squishing a bug. Focus on the arch—that’s where your skating power starts! Too easy? Try spelling “TORONTO” with your toes while rolling.

Step 2: Roll Out the Stiffness
Gear: Foam roller ($20 at Canadian Tire)
Time: 3 mins
Hit these spots like you mean it:
- Quads (front thighs): Roll slow, breathe through the “ouch” spots.
- Hamstrings (back thighs): Pretend you’re flattening playdough.
- Calves: Extra love here if you’ve been sprinting at outdoor rinks!
Parent Pro Tip: For kids under 12, skip rolling the back—focus on legs only.

Step 3: Stretch Like a Pro
No gear needed!
Time: 3 mins
Butterfly Stretch: Sit like a pretzel, knees out. Lean forward—imagine reaching for your water bottle without spilling it.
Lunge Stretch: Drop into a runner’s lunge. Feel that hip flexor? That’s where your stride power lives!
Hold each stretch for 20-30 seconds to improve flexibility and mobility.

Step 4: Get Those Joints Moving
Time: 2 mins
Circle your ankles like you’re drawing Maple Leafs on the floor. Twist your hips like you’re dodging a check. Secret Move: Write your name in the air with your knees!

Step 5: Power Up Your Upper Body
Time: 3 mins
- Push-Ups: Do 10 against a bench if full ones are tough.
- Core Twists: Sit, lean back, twist side-to-side like you’re passing to invisible teammates.
- Shoulder Threads: Reach one arm under your body like you’re stealing the puck.
Pushups
Step 6: Balance Like You’re on Blades
Time: 2 mins
Stand on one leg while pretending to catch a pass. Too steady? Close your eyes! Bonus: Practice this while brushing your teeth—multi-tasking MVP!

Step 7: Sharpen Your Hockey Eyes
Time: 2 mins
Puck Tracking: Have a parent wave two fingers side-to-side while you follow them like it’s a breakaway.
Peripheral Vision Drill: Stare straight ahead while counting how many times they flash fingers in your side view.

Why Consistency Beats Talent
Do this routine 3x/week, and you’ll notice:
- Faster first steps during GTHL games
- Fewer “Why am I so sore?!” mornings
- Coaches giving you more ice time (hello, power play!)
Parents: Be the Ultimate Warm-Up Coach
1. Make it Fun: Blast “Hall of Fame” during warm-ups.
2. Lead by Example: Do the routine with them—your yoga mat counts!
3. Reward Consistency: 10 completed warm-ups = a Timmies hot chocolate.
Toronto Hack: Keep a spare foam roller in the trunk for tournaments at Canlan Ice Sports.
Final Whistle: At the Toronto ICE RAY Hockey Academy, we’ve seen kids transform from “just okay” to unstoppable—not with fancy gear, but with smart prep. Remember: Great players aren’t born ready… they warm up ready. Now go show the ice who’s boss!
